Brecon Motor Club History

We are a Welsh Motor Club that has organisers, marshals and competitors in its ranks. Brecon Motor & Motor Cycle Club was formed by local businessmen back in the early 20th century which catered predominantly for motorcycles, but also cars.

The earliest known reports cover a hillclimb which was held on the Warren Road just outside Brecon in 1921 where motorcycles and a small number of light cars participated. The club had a resurgence in the 1950’s and really came to the fore again in the early sixties when the Gremlin Rally was founded. A meeting was held on Monday November 20th at the Gremlin (Inn) in Brecon by a number of local businessmen and enthusiasts. Octavius Williams, affectionately known as ‘Occy’ built the Gremlin to become a round of the highly prestigious Motoring News Rally Championship, attracting the best rally crews of the era to the lanes of Breconshire.

Since then the Gremlin has gone through many changes and has even taken sabbaticals from time to time and currently the event is run as the very popular “Old Forge Gremlin Historic Road Rally” the only Welsh round of the prestigious HRCR Road Rally Championship.

Elsewhere the club has in the past run the SGC Printing Harry Flatters Rally over the infamous Epynt ranges, counting as a round of the highly prestigious British Historic Rally Championship. The ‘Flatters’ as it was affectionately known is currently rested.

Brecon Motor Club runs The Fairfield Motor Company Epynt Hillclimbs and they are a fantastic weekend out with a huge variety of cars competing from standard road cars to highly tunes specials.

More sedately the club has recently moved into the Classics with a successful Classic Motor Show held at Trago Mills, and the Black Mountains Classic Tour, a scenic drive using the better roads of the locality. In 2025 a town centre show was added and the Market Hall in Brecon was abuzz with locals and enthusiasts from further afield. Plans are afoot for more similar events in the future.

Most importantly, we marshal on other clubs events, our chief marshal ensures the club has been represented at some of the larger events over the years, like the Wyedean Stages, the Tour of Epynt, the Nicky Grist Stages, the Mewla Rally, the Summer Trial, Rally of the Tests, LEJOG and many more where individuals represent the club in various roles.

The club meets at the Workman’s Club in Brecon on the first Wednesday of every month and new members are more than welcome.
